Sedation: Helping You Relax
Are you in desperate need of dental care, but fearful that the visit will be painful? Are you facing treatment and you’d like to just wake up when it’s over? You are not alone. While we care about your comfort and have created an office that is relaxing, we also understand that you might need help to relax, which is why we offer oral sedation as well.
How it works
There are two options that can be used alone or in tandem:
Nitrous Oxide (a.k.a. Laughing Gas)
Medication an hour prior to the appointment
First, we review your medical history and determine the best solution for you. If it is decided that the medication route is best for you and you have no medical restrictions from your physician regarding mild sedation, a prescription is written for you for a mild sedative pill. This pill is to be taken one hour prior to your dental appointment. You will need a companion to drive you to and from the dental office. The pill works to create a relaxed state so you will be drowsy for the time you are treated.
If it is decided that the Nitrous Oxide is the best for you, we administer it on-site during the procedure and monitor you during the use. It is not intended to put you to sleep. You will be able to hear and respond to any requests or directions the dentist may have. Your dentist will ask you to breathe normally through a mask that is placed on your nose, and within a few short minutes you should start to feel the effects of the nitrous oxide. You may feel light-headed or a tingling in your arms and legs. Some people say their arms and legs feel heavy. Ultimately, you should feel calm and comfortable. The effects of nitrous oxide wear off soon after the mask is removed.
Beyond creating an optimal environment for you, sedation dentistry allows us to complete multiple treatments in one appointment. You can relax while we improve your dental health and smile.
